Whether you are talking to your children, wife, friend, or business partner there are certain protocols which enhance meaningful dialogue that I find are important to follow: be calm, have eye contact, and talk in a low and clear voice. Try to find a quiet atmosphere where you can listen carefully to the other person and be patient. Be just and reasonable, and also strong and resolute in your discussion. Using few words and not repeating yourself is important.

If egos get in the way or one of you takes offense or starts yelling in a loud voice meaningful conversation stops. It is a waste of time to argue. During a tense situation, quiet dialogue will keep the conversation from getting out of control.
